BijBlauw: Pietermaai’s Most Colorful Boutique hotel

Curaçao is an island with so many colorful houses and buildings all over the island, and one area really stands out: Pietermaai. Pietermaai is a UNESCO world heritage site because of all the historical houses painted in all the colors you can think of. Three of these colorful buildings are home to Pietermaai’s most colorful boutique hotel: BijBlauw (translated: by blue). The funny fact is that none of these 3 buildings are actually blue. So why the name? That’s one of the things, along with our experience during our stay here, we describe in this blog.

BijBlauw: Pietermaai’s Most Colorful Boutique Hotel

BijBlauw is an oceanfront boutique hotel, and as said above it’s not blue, but painted in red, green, and yellow. The reason it’s called ‘by blue’ is that it’s located right at the clear blue sea, with usually blue skies above it. It’s a real boutique hotel, relatively small with a cozy touch. The friendly staff is the finishing touch on this beautiful and unique place.

Checking in at BijBlauw

When we arrived around noon, we couldn’t resist firstly take some photos of the outside of these 3 colorful houses. The view just gives such a happy feeling. Although we were pretty early, we could check-in already. A friendly lady welcomed us, explained everything, and showed us our beautiful room.

The Rooms We Stayed In

We had the pleasure of staying in two amazing rooms. The first room we stayed in was on the front side of the middle green building. The huge room has a balcony with views over the colorful Pietermaai district. A big comfy bed, a fridge, and a large bathroom. It has everything you need, and we can’t get over that view!

The second room we stayed at was on the backside of the green building, the absolute pearl of this colorful boutique hotel. With a huge private terrace overlooking the sea, and sunbeds to soak up the sun, we were already sold! The room itself is the biggest room of the boutique hotel. It has a comfy bed and a couch to chill on. Furthermore, there is a large bathroom as well, and so many closets you don’t have to worry about how much luggage you bring.

Facilities

BijBlauw also offers a restaurant, where many people will come to enjoy breakfast, lunch, or a lovely dinner with sea-view! Besides the restaurant, there is also a pool where you can take a dip to cool off in these tropical temperatures. Inside the boutique hotel, you can also find a concept store where you can find beautiful clothing, accessories, and decorations. You might want to leave a little bit of room in your suitcase before visiting.

The Location: Pietermaai

As we said, the colorful boutique hotel is located in the UNESCO world heritage area Pietermaai. Besides all the colorful monumental buildings there are also a lot of bars and restaurants in this area. It’s a very lively neighborhood, and it’s also just a short walk from Willemstad’s city center Punda and Otrobanda. Punda is also filled with many restaurants, bars, and shops.

Although it’s in the middle of the city, there is a beach right next to the boutique hotel: Dive City Beach (or beach 88). If you just want to soak up the sun and the sea it’s a great place to chill out. It’s also only a 5-minute drive to Mambo Beach Boulevard. A popular beach area with beach clubs and a boulevard full of shops, bars, and restaurants.
