An escape to the French Alps is always a pleasure. The huge mountains, beautiful lakes, the ringing cowbells, and the ski slopes make this area a true gem to visit in both summer and winter. When the last summer days were upon us we decided to visit these stunning mountains. We went to the department of Haute Savoie, right underneath the lake of Geneva at the Swiss border. There we stayed in two amazing properties of Oasis Parcs in Abondance and La Chapelle-d’Abondance, both located in the Portes du Soleil area. In this blog we will tell you all about our escape to the French Alps, the lovely places we stayed, and the beautiful area.

Oasis Les Portes du Soleil

In the center of the beautiful small town La Chapelle-d’Abondance we stayed in the lovely resort Oasis Les Portes du Soleil. This alpine-style resort has views on ski-slopes and is close to the ski area Les Portes du Soleil. We could park our car directly underneath the buildings and the town center was just a short walk from the hotel. The combination of French Alps views from the beautiful apartments, the cute town, and great outdoor activities on your doorstep are what made staying here great.

Oasis Abondance

A few kilometers away from this town is another beautiful town called Abondance, and here we stayed in the luxurious wellness resort: Oasis Abondance. Just outside of the town, which is filled with beautiful old buildings and small streets, we drove up a steep road to then find amazing views right from our balcony. Up here, the only sound you hear is the ringing cowbells in the distance on the other side of the valley. We loved the peacefulness and luxury of this beautiful mountain resort.

The Penthouse Rooms

At Oasis Les Portes Du Soleil we took the elevator up to the top floor to find just one door. We had the whole top floor to ourselves in this huge penthouse. On both sides of the penthouse we had the typical wooden balconies over the whole width of the building. With 2 bathrooms, and 3 bedrooms it has room for up to 9 people. The living room is huge, with a lovely fireplace and relaxing area and a big kitchen with everything you need. It’s completely designed in mountain-living-style. We loved the amazing view on the ski slopes from our balcony while enjoying a drink during our lovely escape to the French Alps. And when it got a bit colder during the evening we could warm up and chill in the living area.

During our stay at Oasis Abondance we again had the pleasure to stay on the top floor. Here are actually two rooms on the top floor, but this one is even bigger than the penthouse of Les Portes du Soleil. It’s a newer and more luxurious style apartment with a kitchen which has everything you need and more. There is even a steam oven, a separate wine cooler, a normal oven, a dishwasher and much more. It also has a huge living room and a sauna! Again, it also has great views over the French Alps from the huge balcony.

We absolutely loved both of these penthouse rooms and they made our holiday a truly, relaxing escape to the French Alps.

Facilities

Besides the beautiful apartments, both resorts offer some more facilities. Oasis Les Portes Du Soleil does have its own tennis court which you can use during summer, and also a wellness area to take a dip after an active (or relaxed) day during your escape to the French Alps. For the children there is a gaming area.

At Oasis Abondance you can relax in a spa & wellness too. With an indoor pool, a whirlpool and saunas you can totally rewind during your stay. Some of the rooms have a private sauna or jacuzzi as well.

The Location: Les Portes du Soleil

Haute Savoie is a French department at the Swiss border with typical alpine villages and the most amazing mountain views. Abondance and La Chapelle d’Abondance both are located a little bit south of Lac Leman (the lake of Geneva), in the area of Portes du Soleil. In this popular area you can find beautiful mountain towns like Abondance itself, Saint Jean d’Aulps, Morzine and Châtel which are all a must-visit. There are also gorgeous lakes like Lac d’Arvouin which is worth the little hike through the mountain fields where cows are roaming around. And if you visit in winter this is one of the biggest and most popular ski areas.

Outdoor Activities

There is always something to do in the mountains. During summer and winter there are plenty of outdoor activities:

  • Ski & Snowboard during winter
During winter this is one of the biggest ski areas.
  • Rent a bike or mountain bike
There are many amazing bike routes around. Rent a bike or mountain bike to enjoy the beautiful views. Ask at the reception of the resorts for nice routes.
  • Hiking
There is many stunning hikes to do in the area.
  • Visit the beautiful surrounding lakes
There are lots of gorgeous alpine lakes in the area. Our favorites were: Lac d’Arvouin, Lac de Fontaine, Lac de Bise and Lac de Montriond.
  • Paragliding
For the real adrenaline-seekers who are not afraid of heights you can run off a hill and go paragliding!
  • Day trip to Switzerland
You are literally staying on the edge of Switzerland so a day trip to the other side of the border is definitely worth it. Visit the city Montreux located at the lake with beautiful sunset views.
  • Day trip to Lac Leman, Yvoire, and Geneva
One hour away you can visit Lac Leman and drive along the cute towns. A must visit is Yvoire, a cute, historic town.
