Nowadays there are many hotels on Curaçao, but only one can be the oldest. The oldest hotel of Curaçao is located at the beach, close to the city center: Avila Beach Hotel. By staying here we follow in the footsteps of our King (of the Netherlands) who stayed here several times as well. We could definitely see why he liked staying here! In this blog, we tell you all about our experience during our stay at this beautiful hotel.

Hotel at the beach on Curaçao: Avila Beach Hotel
Avila beach hotel opened its doors in 1949 and has become a well-known hotel on Curaçao. The combination of luxury in a historical building, a tropical beach, and a location close to the city center makes the hotel unique. It kept its authentic style and Curaçao feeling. The old buildings, the original old concrete lanterns, the palm trees, and the white sand beaches make it just look so lovely.
Check-in
Since we were only staying about 600 meters away from Avila before we checked in, we decided to walk there with all our luggage (we brought quite a lot because we will stay on the island). In the middle of the day, it’s actually pretty hot to carry around all our stuff so we arrived all sweaty. Luckily we were immediately offered a cold welcome drink and could go to our room where the aircon was already turned on and we could cool off. The plus side of staying in a hotel at the beach on Curaçao is that there are rooms with beautiful views over the Caribbean sea. We had the pleasure of staying in a room so close to the sea that we could almost jump in from our terrace.
The Rooms We Stayed In
La Belle Alliance Ocean Front
During our stay, we actually stayed in two rooms. As said above, we had ocean views from the first room. It was a La Belle Alliance Ocean Front room, in the recently renovated La Belle Alliance Wing which is designed in the Dutch-Caribbean style. It is a spacious room and the view over the sea was just beautiful. We stayed on the ground floor and were just a few meters away from a plunge in the sea. Next to this wing is a tropical garden which offers great views as well!

Ocean Front Blues
For the second part of our stay, we stayed in the (in our opinion) most beautiful part of the beach hotel. Because there is one thing better than staying in a hotel at the beach on Curaçao, and that is staying in a hotel above the sea! We stayed in the Ocean Front Blues room, which is located on a pier in the sea. The wooden structure sticking out in the ocean looks a bit like the Maldivian resort style. Again it’s a spacious room with a large balcony overlooking the bay, the hotel, and the wide Caribbean sea.

Facilities
We already told you that this hotel is at the beach, but it actually has 2 private beaches where you can enjoy the sun, or a beautiful sunset! And besides that, there is also a pool in case you don’t like the salty water. It’s a partly infinity pool which offers beautiful views.

There are also 2 restaurants and 2 bars inside the hotel. One of them is located on another pier which has great views! Unfortunately, it was closed because of Covid-19. The other restaurant was open as well and we enjoyed some great food at this restaurant with beach views.

Furthermore, there is a spa, a big fitness center, conference rooms, a gift shop, and free wifi. Although it’s not very far from the city center, the hotel also has a shuttle service which runs a couple of times a day.

The Location: At the beach in Pietermaai
Avila Beach located is in the World heritage area Pietermaai. The historical area is filled with colorful historical buildings. There are also many bars and restaurants in this area. Right next to Pietermaai is Willemstad’s center: Punda which is also filled with bars and restaurants and here you can find many shops. It’s only a 15-minute walk, but as said above, you can also take the free shuttle which runs twice a day. In the other direction, you are only a 5-minute drive away from Mambo Beach Boulevard, a popular beachfront area with many restaurants, beach bars, and shops.
